Start with the room’s purpose, ceiling height and existing fittings, then choose a light source, layout and colour that work together. Living rooms, kitchens and bedrooms usually benefit from more than one lighting layer rather than a single bright fitting in the centre of the ceiling.

Plan the lighting around the room

In a living room, use ceiling lighting for general illumination and add separate light where people read, work or gather. Recessed spotlights can be aimed at selected areas, while a diffuse ceiling fitting spreads light more evenly. Avoid positioning a strong beam where it shines directly into someone’s eyes or reflects off a television screen.

For a kitchen, plan a general ceiling layer and additional task lighting over work surfaces. Ceiling spots can help cover the room, but their beam direction and spacing affect whether counters and preparation areas are lit well. For a bedroom or hallway, a softer ceiling light can provide useful general illumination; add a separate bedside or wall light where focused reading light is needed.

Compare brightness and beam spread

Use the lumen figure on a product listing to compare light output. Wattage tells you how much electrical power a lamp uses; it does not tell you directly how bright the light will appear. The number and position of lights, ceiling height, wall colour and shades also affect the result. A narrow spotlight beam concentrates light in one direction, while a wider beam covers more of the surrounding area. Check the beam angle and product dimensions before you choose.

If you are planning several fittings, sketch the room and mark the main work areas, seating and circulation routes. That simple plan can help you avoid dark patches and reduce glare. Our guide to lux levels explains how illuminance relates to the amount of light reaching a surface.

Choose a colour temperature and colour quality

Warm white light is often chosen for relaxing spaces such as living rooms and bedrooms. Neutral or cooler white can suit kitchens and other areas where people want a crisper appearance. The label and Kelvin figure on each product are the best way to compare colour; see our colour temperature guide before mixing different lamps in the same open-plan room.

Where the appearance of food, fabrics, artwork or finishes matters, check the lamp’s colour-rendering information as well as its colour temperature. These measures describe different aspects of light. Read our guide to CRI and LED lighting for help comparing them.

Check the fitting before you buy

LED ceiling lighting includes integrated fittings and lamps designed for compatible sockets. Before ordering a replacement bulb, confirm its cap, voltage, dimensions and wattage against the existing fitting. For a new downlight, check the cut-out size, installation depth, ceiling construction and any clearance requirements. A lamp that has the right base may still be too large for the shade or recessed space.

If you want to adjust brightness, choose a product explicitly marked as dimmable and check that your dimmer is compatible with that lamp or fitting. LED products can behave differently on older dimmers, so do not assume that an existing switch will work without checking the specifications.

Bathrooms and installation safety

For bathrooms or other locations exposed to moisture, check the fitting’s IP rating against the intended position and follow current electrical requirements. Do not select a fitting for a bathroom from appearance alone. Mains wiring, recessed fittings and location-specific installations should be assessed and connected by a qualified electrician. Switch off the supply before any lamp replacement and follow the product and fitting instructions.

Before choosing LED ceiling lights

Decide which areas need general, task or accent light.

Compare lumens, beam angle and colour temperature, not wattage alone.

Check the lamp cap or fitting dimensions, cut-out and available ceiling depth.

Confirm dimmer compatibility and any location-specific IP or clearance requirements.

Use more than one lighting layer where a single ceiling light would leave work or seating areas in shadow.

Browse our LED ceiling lights and spotlights to compare available fitting types, then check the specifications on each product page before ordering.

Well-planned LED ceiling lights make a room comfortable to use as well as bright enough for everyday tasks.
